
Why Does My Child Struggle to Concentrate?
“My child can't sit still.”
“I have to repeat the instructions over and over.”
“They start an activity and lose focus after a few minutes.”
“They know the answer, but make mistakes because they weren't paying attention.”
If you've ever said one of these things, you're certainly not alone.
Difficulty concentrating is a common concern for parents, especially when children begin facing increasingly demanding academic tasks. But a child who struggles to stay focused is not necessarily lazy, unmotivated, or unwilling to learn.
Attention is a complex cognitive process that plays an essential role in learning. It helps children select relevant information, stay engaged with a task, follow instructions, remember what they have just learned and use that information to solve a problem.
So why do some children lose focus so quickly? Can children actually learn to concentrate better? And most importantly, what can parents do at home to make learning easier without turning every activity into a battle?
Concentration and Attention: What Exactly Do We Mean?
Before looking for strategies, it helps to understand what concentration actually involves.
We often use attention and concentration as if they meant exactly the same thing. They are closely related, but there is an important distinction.
Attention helps children select what matters
At any given moment, the brain receives an enormous amount of information.
There are sounds, sights, movements, sensations, thoughts and distractions happening around us.
Attention helps the brain select the information that is relevant to the task.
For example, when a child is reading a sentence, they may need to:
- look at the words;
- recognize letters and sounds;
- blend sounds together;
- understand the meaning;
- remember the beginning of the sentence;
- ignore noises or movements around them.
So concentrating is much more than simply looking at a worksheet.
Concentration helps maintain attention
Once a child has directed their attention toward something, they also need to maintain it long enough to complete the task.
This ability develops gradually throughout childhood.
A child in Kindergarten or Grade 1 does not have the same self-regulation skills as an older elementary school student.
This is why a task that seems very short to an adult can already require considerable mental effort from a young child.
A Child Who Gets Distracted Isn't Necessarily a Child Who Can't Focus
This is one of the most important distinctions for parents to make.
A child may struggle to concentrate in certain situations, while being able to stay deeply engaged in an activity they find interesting.
You may have experienced this yourself:
“They can't focus on homework for five minutes, but they can build with LEGO for 45 minutes!”
That doesn't necessarily mean your child is choosing not to concentrate during schoolwork.
The task itself matters.
An activity can be:
- too difficult;
- too easy;
- too long;
- repetitive;
- uninteresting;
- poorly matched to the child's current level;
- or surrounded by too many distractions.
On the other hand, an interactive, hands-on and appropriately challenging activity can make it easier for a child to stay engaged.
Research on elementary school students has found that on-task behavior can decrease as instructional periods become longer, with one observational study finding a decline as instructional duration increased from 10 to 30 minutes.
This does not mean that every child should only work for 10 minutes.
It does mean that:
longer does not automatically mean better learning.
Why Do Some Children Find It Harder to Stay Focused?
There isn't one single explanation.
Attention is influenced by many factors, including fatigue, task difficulty, motivation, the learning environment and the amount of information the child has to process.
1. Fatigue
A tired child has fewer resources available for sustained attention.
A busy school day, insufficient sleep, a change in routine or simply a particularly tiring day can make learning much harder.
Before saying:
“You're not even trying.”
it can be useful to ask:
“Is my child actually ready to learn right now?”
Sometimes the most effective strategy is not another worksheet, but a break.
2. The task is too difficult
A child may lose focus because they don't understand what they are supposed to do.
Imagine a child who is asked to solve a math problem involving a skill they haven't fully mastered yet.
They may need to:
- understand the instructions;
- work out what the question is asking;
- remember a mathematical rule;
- choose a strategy;
- calculate the answer;
- and check their work.
That's a lot to manage at once.
If the task is too far beyond their current level, frustration can quickly replace concentration.
The opposite can also happen
An activity that is far too easy can become boring.
The goal is therefore not simply to make activities easier.
It is to find a level where the child can experience challenge without constant failure.
3. Repetition Can Become Boring
Practice is essential for learning. But practising the same skill in exactly the same way over and over again can quickly become frustrating for children.
Instead, try changing how the child interacts with the same learning goal:
- reading information;
- matching cards;
- finding a correct answer;
- sorting;
- playing memory;
- answering questions;
- or playing a simple educational game.

Does the Brain Learn Better When Children Are Active?
Attention isn't only about how long a child stays seated.
What the child is doing during that time matters too.
Research on active learning has found that integrating movement and academic content can improve children's on-task behavior. One large elementary-school study involving 2,716 children across 28 schools found that active learning was associated with increased time on task.
Other research has found that physically active learning can also support learning outcomes. In one study involving 104 children aged 8–10, children learning vocabulary through activity-based approaches performed better on memory measures than children in a sedentary teaching condition, although the study did not find differences in focused attention between groups.
This is an important distinction:
movement can support learning, but it isn't a magic solution for attention.
What matters is how the activity is designed.
Why Can Learning Through Play Help Children Stay Engaged?
Play is not automatically educational.
But well-designed games can create several conditions that are useful for learning.
Games give children an immediate goal
Find the matching card.
Complete the board.
Find the correct answer.
Build a sequence.
Match the multiplication to its answer.
The child knows what they are trying to accomplish.
Games encourage active participation
Instead of simply looking at information, children may:
- manipulate cards;
- make choices;
- compare answers;
- remember information;
- solve problems;
- communicate with another player.
Games provide immediate feedback
A child can often see quickly whether an answer is correct.
That makes it possible to try again without necessarily experiencing the activity as repetitive practice.
Research examining the relationship between play, attention and learning suggests that the links are complex and that more research is needed to understand exactly how different forms of play influence cognitive development and learning.
So the evidence does not support the simplistic idea that “playing is always better than traditional learning”.
A better conclusion is:
Well-designed playful activities can create active, motivating learning situations that may make it easier for children to engage with and practice a skill.
But More Stimulation Doesn't Always Mean Better Concentration
It can be tempting to think that the more colourful, animated and exciting an activity is, the more engaging it will be.
Not necessarily.
Young children can also become distracted by irrelevant visual information.
Recent research with preschool children found that salient visual distractors could impair performance on attention tasks.
In other words:
playful doesn't have to mean visually overwhelming.
For a child who struggles to focus, it can be helpful to choose activities with:
- clear instructions;
- a simple visual structure;
- one main objective;
- limited distractions;
- manageable amounts of information;
- and a level of difficulty suited to the child.
Sometimes simpler is better.
7 Practical Ways to Help Your Child Concentrate
1. Start With a Short Activity
If your child loses focus after 15 minutes, don't begin by asking them to work for 30 minutes.
Start with something they can successfully complete.
For example:
10 minutes of focused activity → short break → optional second activity.
The goal isn't to force a child to sit still for as long as possible.
It's to gradually build their ability to engage, persist and return to a task.
2. Give One Instruction at a Time
Consider this instruction:
“Read the sentences, circle the words, write the answers and then colour the pictures.”
For an adult, that may seem perfectly manageable.
For a young child, several actions have to be remembered and organised at once.
Try:
“First, read the sentences.”
Then give the next instruction.
This reduces the amount of information the child has to hold in mind while working.
3. Change the Activity Format
This is one of the simplest ways to reduce boredom.
Suppose you're practising reading.
You could alternate:
reading → matching game → short worksheet → card game → reading.
For math:
mental calculation → cards → problem solving → hands-on game.
The skill can stay the same.
The experience changes.
This is particularly useful when a child needs repeated practice but quickly becomes frustrated by traditional worksheets.
4. Use Hands-On Learning
Some children understand and remember concepts more easily when they can physically manipulate information.
Instead of asking only:
“What number is this?”
you might ask the child to:
- find the matching card;
- sort numbers;
- pair a numeral with a number word;
- complete a domino;

6. Let Children Move
Concentration does not necessarily mean sitting completely still.
Some children focus better when they can:
- stand up;
- move cards around;
- work on the floor;
- manipulate objects;
- change position;
- or take a short movement break.
A systematic review of classroom-based physical activity interventions found that the available evidence generally points toward beneficial effects on attention and on-task behavior, although the studies varied considerably in their methods and the type and duration of activity used.
More recent research has also explored short active breaks. A 2025 pilot study with second-grade children used daily 10-minute active breaks and reported improvements in selective and sustained attention over the intervention period, although the sample was small and the findings should be interpreted cautiously.
So you don't necessarily need a 30-minute exercise session.
Sometimes:
learn → move → learn
is a better rhythm than:
sit → sit → sit → lose focus.
7. Stop Before Your Child Is Completely Overwhelmed
This can be surprisingly difficult for parents.
When a child starts losing focus, we often want to say:
“Come on, just two more questions.”
But if the child is no longer genuinely engaged, those extra questions may result in:
- careless mistakes;
- frustration;
- arguments;
- negative feelings about learning.
Sometimes stopping at the right moment is more productive than continuing.
What If My Child Can Focus for Ages When They're Playing?
This is a very common question.
A child may spend 45 minutes building something, drawing or playing a favourite game, but struggle to spend 10 minutes on homework.
That does not necessarily mean:
“They are capable of concentrating, so they are choosing not to.”
The two activities may place very different demands on the brain.
A freely chosen activity may be:
- more motivating;
- more concrete;
- immediately rewarding;
- easier to understand;
- better matched to the child's abilities;
- and full of rapid feedback.
Schoolwork may require more deliberate effort, working memory and self-regulation.
So instead of asking only:
“How long can my child concentrate?”
ask:
“Under what conditions does my child concentrate best?”
That is a much more useful question.
Can a 10–15 Minute Learning Routine Really Help?
A short activity isn't enough to teach an entire skill from scratch.
But 10–15 focused minutes can be enough for meaningful practice or review, particularly when it is part of a regular routine.
Try this simple structure:
3 minutes — Warm-up
A very easy question, matching game or quick challenge.
The goal is to get started successfully.
7 minutes — Main activity
A game, short worksheet or hands-on activity.
3 minutes — Change the format
Practise the same skill in a different way.
2 minutes — Reflect
Ask:
“What was easy?”
“What was tricky?”
“What did you learn?”
Then stop.
You don't need to keep going until your child is exhausted.
The Key: Change the Format Without Always Changing the Learning Goal
This is one of the most useful ideas for parents.
You can practise the same skill in several different ways.
Example: learning numbers from 1 to 100
Step 1: Read several numbers.
Step 2: Match numerals with number words.
Step 3: Play number bingo.
Step 4: Play memory.
Step 5: Finish with a domino or matching game.
The child has practised the same underlying knowledge repeatedly.
But they haven't completed five identical worksheets.

Before asking:
“How can I make my child work?”
try asking:
“Why are they refusing?”
They might be:

What About a Child Who Is Constantly Distracted?
It's important not to immediately assume that every concentration difficulty means ADHD or another condition.
All children experience periods of distractibility.
Attention can also be affected by:
- tiredness;
- stress;
- anxiety;
- learning difficulties;
- sensory distractions;
- task difficulty;
- motivation;
- changes in routine.
If difficulties are persistent, significant, occur across different settings and have a noticeable impact on your child's school, family or social life, it is worth discussing them with your child's teacher, pediatrician or another qualified professional.
